THE MONASTERY
Perhaps our favorite single location on the entire island, the Monastery of St. Gerasimus, Kefalonia's patron saint, is nestled in the village of Valsamata. The actual monastery is small, however, unique and magical beyond measure.
The naturally mummified saint is on display for worshippers every half hour when a priest and nun open his silver sarcophagus for those to see and even touch for his blessings.
Beneath the monastery is a special cave dug out by Gerasimus himself where visitors can climb down into-as long as they are not claustrophobic!
Next door you may also visit the Church of Saint Gerasimus, one of the largest churches in Greece, to see incredible iconography.
THE VINEYARDS
Down the road from the monastery, we make our way to the first of the day's two vineyards Orealios Gaea. Robola White Wine, found only on our island, is at the center of this tasting, however the quality of the whites, roses, and even dessert wines are on a superior level.
Greek wine is certainly underrated compared to the longer aged wines of Italy, France and Spain, but this is why we love the wines of the Greek Islands. They are light and refreshing, meant to be enjoyed all day without causing headaches over hangovers.
Our second vineyard, Gentilini, is the perfect complement to the first. Here we see again the robot grape however the contrasting wines are luscious blends cultivated with extreme care.

THE BEACH
Depending on what you're looking for, there is always a beach for you. Normally we had to Saint Thomas beach where there are two beautiful breaks, one sandy and one rocky, both of which have restaurants overlooking the sea. We can enjoy this beach for as long as you'd like. We can head towards the lighthouse and closer to town as well for another swim if you're interested in exploring.
